Obituary for John W. Callahan

John W. Callahan, 84 of Cranston died Thursday at the Brentwood Nursing Home in Warwick.

Born in Providence, a son of the late William H.S. and Gertrude R. (Dillon) Callahan, he had lived in Cranston for most of his life. Mr. Callahan was the Assistant Director of Long-Term Care for the State of Rhode Island before retiring in 1996. He was a graduate of LaSalle Academy and Providence College where he was a member of the R.O.T.C. John Served in the United States Army and retired with the rank of Captain from the Army Reserve in 1973. John truly enjoyed spending time with his son and grandchildren. An avid reader, he was a member of the Civil War Round Table and the Cranston Historical Society. He was a past member of the Rhode Island Historical Society.

He leaves a son, Michael P. Callahan of Blue Spring, Missouri; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. John was the dear friend of Mary McCabe. He was the brother of the late Barbara M. Haggerty and James J. Callahan.

Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic his funeral services and burial in Saint Ann Cemetery will be private. A Memorial Mass will be scheduled at a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory to Saint Paul Church One St. Paul Place Edgewood, RI 02905 will be appreciated.
